When you begin your new adventure in building a chicken coop it could become very costly if you are not sure what you are doing. So what are the proper tools you ask?  The proper tools would be a plan.  A plan is the most important tool you will need.  With the proper plan you will do fine, even if this is your very first time. How will the doors and windows open, are they placed in the most useful place to allow in the proper amount of daily sunlight?

Will there be enough room where I’m planning on building a chicken coop for  a outside run?

Protection:  Protection is a must when building chicken coops.  Do you have a good plan so your coop is protected at all hours of the day from predators?  One very important key factor in building chicken coops is protection.  Be sure to protect them not only from predators but themselves also.

Ventilation:  The goal is for farm fresh, healthier eggs, right?  Then ventilation is key!  With the proper ventilation, not only your chickens will be happier and healthier but you will most certainly be happier!

Light Source:  Not only do your chickens need natural sunlight, or at the least an equivalent to it, but you will need to see when entering the coop too.  Make sure to plan out a good light source for both purposes.

Looks:  Maybe you don’t really care what your coop looks like, and maybe that’s perfectly fine for your area, but if you have neighbors is very nice to take them into consideration.  They are more likely to enjoy the structure if it’s pleasant to look at.  This does not mean building the Mansion of all chicken coops in your backyard, but a simply paint job may be enough to do the trick.
