When should my dog start to cock it’s leg?
With our two dogs growing fast, the concern of when they will start to cock their leg comes to mind. We’ve been told by Blue’s breeder that if they have their balls chopped off too early then this can cause kidney problems later on, and other sites suggest that this can halt their development in other ways such as the dog retaining puppy like features and attitude. Whilst this may seem cute and desirable, it sound barbaric to have it done too soon.So
So why do they cock their legs? I’ve always been of the impression that it is a territorial trait to get their scent higher up, and this is confirmed in many dog manuals. One thing you can do to encourage a dog to start to cock his leg is with more socialisation with groups of older males.

I’m glad to see somebody else who doesn’t feel the need to fix their animal the minute they are able to survive surgury…
It’s not PR… but I think letting animals live in a natural way rather than force them to develop our way, is always best.

Well, I’ve been told that removing thier balls lessens thier risk to develop prostate cancer so of course i had it removed. My dogs health is much more important to me.

Yeah, I’ve seem to remember that from our vet too. But health is to do with lifestyle and diet, and I don’t see cancer as inevitable.
But thanks for mentioning it! I’ll have to do some research on it and see what I can dig up for both sides of the arguement.

i dont think giving any dog an operation that it dosnt need is a good idea.in fact it seems to be barbarric. i have two dogs and there both natural as there ment to be and there both in perfect health. give your animals good food ,plllllllenty of exersise, and of course loads of love and they will be fine.
