Robot dogs to replace the real thing?

Over on a site called they highlight the latest sony toy dog called “AIBO”. The latest revision of the dog is “enabled with conversation with some 1,000 phrases suited to the “character” it develops while the owner cheers it up and strokes it”. Sort of like a real dog then?

According to AlertNet, the dog could well be connected by radio to the bathroom scales, a pedometer and a personal organiser in which the owner would note his daily food intake. It can then nag you to get out and exercise. Sort of like a real dog then?

Jim Landers, over a The Dallas News suggests that the toy animal is complicated enough to learn and develop patterns depending on your reactions and speech. This could lead to the situation where the owner get emotionally attached to pet dogs. Sort of like… I think you get the point.
